An AI tutor for middle school students

TutorAura · Updated

Middle school is when schoolwork changes. Maths moves from numbers to algebra, science brings in new vocabulary and experiments, writing has to make an argument, and students are expected to manage more homework on their own. TutorAura's AI tutor helps students in grades 6 to 8 (years 7 to 9 in the UK) with all of it: it explains one step at a time, asks a short question to check each step, and remembers what they find tricky.

It's built to help students learn to do the work themselves, not to do it for them.

Key takeaways

  • Covers every middle school subject, pitched to grades 6 to 8.
  • Explains one step at a time and checks understanding as it goes.
  • Helps with homework and test prep without writing answers to hand in.
  • For grades 6 and 7, a parent or guardian confirms the account during setup.

Example: the jump to algebra

Many students meet their first equations in middle school. Here's an example of how a session goes for solve 3x+5=203x + 5 = 20:

Tutor: We want xx on its own. What's happening to xx here?

Student: It's multiplied by 3, then 5 is added.

Tutor: Right. To undo that, we work backwards. What should we do first to both sides?

Student: Take away 5. So 3x=153x = 15.

Tutor: Good. Your turn: what's the last step?

The student finishes with x=5x = 5, then checks it: 3×5+5=203 \times 5 + 5 = 20. The tutor then sets a similar equation to make sure the method has stuck.

Homework help that builds independence

Middle school is a good time to build habits that last into high school. The tutor:

  • Starts with the question. What is it asking? What do you already know?
  • Gives hints, not answers. A full worked solution is available if a student asks, but the default is the next step.
  • Gives feedback on writing. It helps plan essays and comments on drafts, but doesn't write graded work.
  • Checks working. Students can write on the whiteboard and ask the tutor to check each line.

Research supports this approach: in a 2025 study of high school maths practice, students who practised with a standard AI chat assistant did worse on a later exam without it, while those using a version designed to guide them did not. Read more on our AI homework help page.

Getting ready for tests

Middle school brings more tests and the first end-of-year exams. Tell the tutor what's on the test and when it is: it suggests a short plan, quizzes you one question at a time, and spends more time on what you get wrong. Our guide on how to study for a test explains why testing yourself and spreading out your study works better than re-reading notes.

For parents

  • Setup: for grade 7 and below, a parent or guardian confirms they're setting up the account or have given permission.
  • Safety: the tutor keeps conversations on schoolwork, doesn't ask for personal details, and encourages students to talk to a trusted adult if they seem upset.
  • Staying involved: there's no separate parent dashboard yet. You can look at your child's conversations and the "What the tutor remembers" notes in their account.
