SAT Transitions
Choose the transition word or phrase that shows the logical relationship between ideas.
Also known as: transition words, logical transitions, however therefore for example.
Key ideas
- Contrast: however, nevertheless, by contrast, still.
- Cause/effect: therefore, thus, as a result, consequently.
- Example: for example, for instance. Addition: moreover, furthermore, in addition.
- Sequence: then, subsequently, finally. Similarity: similarly, likewise.
Name the relationship
Ignore the choices at first. Read the two ideas around the blank and ask how they relate. Does the second idea contradict the first, result from it, illustrate it, add to it, or come next in time?
Match, then check
Pick the transition in that category, then reread the full text. Transitions in the same category (e.g. therefore and thus) won't both appear as choices, so one category match is usually decisive.
