SAT Words in Context
Choose the most precise word for a blank, or the meaning of a word as it's used in a short text.
Also known as: SAT vocabulary, most logical and precise word.
Key ideas
- The text always contains the clue you need, often a contrast word (but, although) or a restatement after a colon or dash.
- Predict your own word before reading the choices.
- Eliminate choices that are the wrong tone (too positive or negative) even if they're related to the topic.
How these questions work
You'll see a short text with a blank and four words or phrases. The correct answer is the one that is most logical (fits the meaning of the whole text) and most precise (says exactly that, not something vaguer or stronger).
Look for clue words. Although and but signal a contrast; a colon, dash or in other words signals that the next part restates the blank's meaning.
A reliable method
- Read the whole text and underline the clue.
- Say your own word for the blank ("something like careful").
- Pick the choice closest to your prediction.
- Reread the sentence with it: does it say exactly what the text means?
Worked examples
Example 1 · Using a restatement clue

- Step 1.The colon introduces a restatement: the report took no side.
- Step 2.Predict: "impartial". The closest choice is neutral.
Answer: neutral
Example 2 · Using a contrast clue
Although the painter's early works were largely ______, drawing on her teachers' styles, her later paintings developed a voice unmistakably her own.
- Step 1.Although sets early work against an original later voice.
- Step 2.So the early work was unoriginal: derivative.
Answer: derivative
Common mistakes
- Choosing a word that is associated with the topic but doesn't fit the logic of the sentence.
